SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Students, members of the community and others interested in visiting China – either for academic credit or just as a tourist – are invited to travel with Lake Superior State University this May and June.

LSSU is offering a faculty-led study abroad program at Beijing University of Technology May 7-June 13, which includes a two-week tour, May 28-June 13, of historic, cultural and scenic attractions in five cities, including Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou.

All majors are welcome for the study-abroad program and the community is invited to join the students at the end of the program. Neither students nor visitors need to know how to speak Chinese to enjoy the tour. The academic program offers two three-credit courses taught in English that fulfill six hours of LSSU general education requirements in humanities and diversity.

The prices are the same as the 2011 study-abroad and tourist trips. A program fee of $5,660 for the study-abroad trip includes: LSSU tuition for six credits; round-trip airfare between the US and China; lodging, lunch and dinner each day, travel insurance, side-trip excursions, admission fees to museums and attractions, including an acrobatic show, the Beijing Opera, Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show and river cruise.

In Beijing, in addition to the field trips planned for the study program, participants will visit World Cultural Heritage sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, and much more.

The price for the tour alone is $3,845, which includes stops in five popular tourist destinations. Visitors will spend four days in Beijing, the Chinese capital; two days in Hangzhou, a famous scenic tourist attraction; four days in Shanghai, the financial and commercial center of China; a day in Suzhou and three days in the ancient Chinese capital of Xi'an, where the famous terra-cotta warriors were excavated.

Not included are passport and visa fees; textbooks, laundry, drinks, independent travel, personal expenses, including medical expenses incurred in China. Please note vaccinations are not required to enter China.

Deadline for application, application fee of $25 and a deposit of $1,600 are due by March 23. Total program payment -- the remaining $4,060/$2,245 -- is due by April 25. Checks should be made payable to: Lake Superior State University.
