LSSU camps offer summer fun

FOLLOW THE BALL - Lake Superior State University Head Tennis Coach Tom Linhart watches and drills last year's tennis campers during a session on the Norris Tennis Complex. Linhart and members of his collegiate team return to the courts for two sessions this year, June 25-28 and July 9-12. The sessions divide into PeeWee (ages 4-6) and Junior (all ages) groups for personalized, one-on-one instruction. (LSSU/Sean O'Mara)

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University has a great variety of camp offerings lined up and is inviting pre-college students to campus this summer for a Superior Edventure.

Explorations include subjects in field and aquatic ecology, environmental science, computer science, criminal justice, fire science, photography and more. Sports camps include track and field and cross country techniques, while outdoor Edventures will include canoeing, hiking, rappelling, and developing outdoor survival skills. Students in the "Summer Dance Intensive" camp will not only have fun, but may also be eligible to receive college credit.

Most of the camps cater to grades 6-12, providing students with an opportunity to learn and have fun in an area of their interest with their peers who share similar interests, however four weeks of kids science camps will provide instruction for students in grades 2-6.

"Each student will receive one-on-one instruction and benefit from hands-on learning, and each course encourages creative thinking, the development of problem solving skills, and individual exploration of student interests. These pre-college summer experiences enhance school performance and carry over to lifelong learning," said Julia Roque, coordinator of the summer camp program. "Students will learn in our labs, eat on campus, enjoy recreational time in our university facilities and off campus, and stay in our college residence halls if they are with us for an overnight camp."

Roque said the Superior Edventures camps are taught by LSSU faculty and staff and others who are knowledgeable about their subject matter and share their enthusiasm with their students. Students will have a chance to meet and interact with other students who share their interests.

Roque said LSSU is also working with its charter schools to customize camps for students based on their pre-college interests. Several charter schools currently bring groups of students to campus for robotics, science, ecology camps and more.
