Lake State Golf Classic proceeds close in on record

PUTT-GUN START – Golfers go long for the inaugural Classic Outdoor Ricochet Putt Off during the 23nd annual Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Golf Classic, held June 8-10 at Gaylord’s Otsego Club. SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s 23rd annual Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Golf Classic for Laker Club and the Fund for LSSU was held June 8-10 at Gaylord’s Otsego Club. The event attracted more than 115 alumni and friends of Lake Superior State.

Highlights of the event was the live auction featuring an autographed Matthew Stafford football, Nicklas Lidstrom puck, Zdeno Chara jersey and many other items held at the Saturday night Classic Bash. Including the silent auction, over 100 items were sold throughout the weekend. With a final accounting in process it appears the auction may match last year’s record.

Taking first place with a score of 59, in the Laker Flight on the Tribute Course were Ritch Lewis, Mel Lewis, Michael Schauer and Dave Bohnett. Second place Laker Flight, were the foursome of Dennis Jahn, Ty Jones, Mark Gleason and Jeff McLeod with a 60.

In the Seymour Flight, Rick Fitzpatrick, Chuck Cliff, Chuck Schmidt and Pete Schmidt took first-place honors on a tie-breaker with a score of 58 while the team of Matt Sparks, Tom Linhart, Todd Riford and Dave Weizcor placed second with a 63.

The Mixed team winners were Mark Mercer, Rod Nelson, Sandy Parrish and Frank Foster with a score of 66 followed by Rachael McCoy, Peter Scornaiencki, Jim and Julia Roque with a 67. The Women’s winners were Shannon Eggers, Sandra Collins, Barb Terry and Darla Dean with a score of 70.

Winners in the Hornets Flight were David Scott, Mike Day, Rob Martens and Jerry Stephens with a score of 59 followed by the team of Corey Sober, Jason Morehouse, Eric Moran and Kevin Martin with 62.

Special event winners were Matt Romatz, longest drive, and Terry Kohler for longest putt. The Women’s special event winners were Rachael McCoy, longest putt and Barb Terry, longest drive.
