2012 LSSU Womens Walk nets major sponsors

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – War Memorial Hospital and Cup of the Day will serve as the major sponsors of the fourth annual Lake Superior State University Women’s Walk, which has become the primary fund-raiser for LSSU women’s athletics.
The 2012 LSSU Women’s Walk begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Norris Center. Walkers donate $25 to participate in the 30-minute walk and earn the chance to win prizes. Individuals may sponsor their favorite Laker teams or “team captains.” Businesses are encouraged to enter teams of walkers or provide sponsorships in the form of matching funds.
“This is a big step for women’s athletics, getting corporate sponsorship from two of the top businesses in town,” noted LSSU interim head women’s basketball coach Shannon Eggers, who is the founder and co-chairman of the LSSU Women’s Walk. “These are good companies to have on board, ones we know we can count on to be there in following years. And this ties into our small business initiative here in Sault Ste. Marie.”
Local businesses have generously supported LSSU athletics for decades, but the revenue has mainly supported the Lakers’ high-profile teams. In three years, the Women’s Walk has generated more than $130,000 for LSSU women’s basketball, volleyball, tennis, track and field, cross country, softball and golf during the past three years, including $42,000 raised in 2011.
“This event shows the collaboration of all the sports, and the athletes make it what it is,” said Eggers, who co-chairs the event along with LSSU volleyball coach Ben Kaszeta. “They’ve been working on this for four months. It’s now one of the biggest fund-raisers on campus, and the programs are starting to see what the Women’s Walk can do for them.”
Eggers patterned the LSSU event after Nebraska-Omaha’s Women’s Walk, now called named the Claussen-Leahy Run/Walk, which recently hit the $4 million milestone after its 26th year. After reaching the $100,000 mark, LSSU’s next goal is $1 million.
