Eleven-hundred handprints raise awareness of suicide
Posted: October 1st, 2012
HANDS OF REMEMBRANCE – Lake Superior State University students Kasey Strieter and Carl Mason pause to look at hand print art outside of LSSU's Quarterdeck dining area. The university's Office of Counseling Services encouraged students and staff to incorporate messages into 1,100 pieces of artwork — representing the number of college-age people who commit suicide each year — to raise awareness and remember victims. The display capped activities held at Lake State during National Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 9-15, which included a yellow ribbon presentation, luminary lighting, and wish lantern release. Counseling services thanks the nursing department's Melissa Copenhaver and LSSU's School of Education for their help during the week. LSSU students can reach counseling at 906/635-2752 for information about free and confidential services. (LSSU/John Shibley)
