Redefining the Classroom

LSSU Arts Center gains dedicated dance studio

Posted: October 4th, 2012

ARTS CENTER GAINS DANCE STUDIO – Lake Superior State University's Dance Company practices in a studio space created for them in LSSU's Arts Center. According to dance professor Deborah Choszczyk, preparations for the move from the Norris Center began last March and included installing a new dance floor and ballet barres, handrails that dancers use to steady themselves. LSSU maintenance personnel and community volunteers laid the new flooring, attached the ballet barres, removed old white board, cleaned curtains, and laid protective carpet at the studio entrance. The studio will be used as a classroom, rehearsal, and performance space. An adjoining room was created for the dancers to use as a lounge and dressing room. The studio has already proved beneficial for daily dance technique classes, dance company meetings, and rehearsals for an upcoming Dancing with the Stars fundraiser that benefits Hospice of Chippewa County, to be held Oct. 19 at the Kewadin Dream Makers Lounge in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The company is also preparing for its annual Festival of Trees performance on Nov. 30 in the Arts Center. "We cannot thank President Tony McLain, Provost Morrie Walworth, College Dean Paige Gordier, and departmental chair Kirk Mauldin enough for their support, and plan on performing this year's festival in their honor," says Choszczyk.
