LSSU recognizes impressive group of alumni, friends

ABOVE AND BEYOND – Lake Superior State University Foundation Executive Director Tom Coates (right; 1986 LSSU graduate) poses with the management team of Precision Edge Surgical Products after the company received the LSSU Alumni Association's Donald and Catherine Finlayson Award during a special banquet on campus Oct. 27. The citation recognizes individuals or organizations who are leaders in their fields and are strong advocates of the University's programs, faculty and students. From its base in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Precision Edge is a world-renowned contract manufacturer of fine surgical components, cutting tools, burs, blades, drills, instruments and other surgical cutting accessories used in orthopedic surgery and procedures. Each year the company provides four scholarships of $2,500 each to LSSU for local high school seniors. The company is also supporting the South Hall renovation project and will have a seminar room in the new building named in its honor. ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – Tom Ewing poses with his wife, Marsha, after he accepted the LSSU Alumni Association's Kenneth Shouldice Achievement Award during a special banquet on campus Oct. 27. The citation highlights significant achievements of alumni who serve as leaders in the region, state and nation. Ewing was nominated for this award because of the time he gives to many causes in the community. He works with the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club, Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, United Way Volunteer Center, Sault Country Club, Sault Area Public Schools, and the Soo Theatre Project. Professionally, he is currently vice president and general manager of Sovereign Communications, which owns and operates 15 radio stations across the Upper Peninsula, including WSOO, where he started in broadcasting. OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS – Dan Laur (left) accepts the LSSU Alumni Association's Outstanding Alumnus Award from his former political science professor, Dr. Richard Frey, during a special banquet on campus Oct. 27. The citation recognizes Laur as a person who is successful and who supports his alma mater with his time, talent and financial support. He is president of Laur Silicone Inc., a company that specializes in custom formulating and mixing silicone rubber for use in a variety of manufacturing products. Laur helped his parents launch the company after he graduated from LSSU in 1977 with bachelor's degrees in history and political science. (Photo by John Shibley)

OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNA – Lake Superior State University alumna Heather Benjamin accepts the LSSU Alumni Association's Paul Ripley Young Alumna Award from her father, Gary. On the left is longtime LSSU business professor Madan Saluja, a former teacher and mentor of both. The citation recognizes alumni who have experienced exceptional professional success early in their careers. Heather Benjamin graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in accounting, obtained her CPA license in Michigan and Illinois in 2003, and earned a master's in business administration from Michigan State University in 2006. She is currently a risk manager for Deloitte out of its Chicago office, and is pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership and business management. Gary Benjamin is a former member of LSSU's Board of Trustees, a 2007 recipient of the LSSU School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award, and the 2001 recipient of the LSSU Outstanding Alumnus Award.
