LSSU sponsors annual Financial Aid Nights and adds FAFSA Fridays

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- High school seniors and parents interested in learning more about college financial aid and its availability are getting the opportunity this month and in early February through Lake Superior State University Financial Aid Nights.
In addition to the college financing information provided at these annual programs, LSSU is adding some informational sessions this year that are geared specifically for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Financial Aid Nights lead up to the annual College Goal Sunday on February 10, a free workshop to help parents and students fill out the FAFSA. The federal document is a requirement for any student seeking college financial aid.
During the Financial Aid Nights, staff from LSSU’s Financial Aid office are visiting high schools around the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula to talk to families about scholarships, grants, loans and employment programs, and will advise students how to apply for student aid. Emphasis will be placed on eligibility requirements, how to evaluate an aid offer, and how to complete the FAFSA – all of which should be considered by students and parents, no matter which college the student will be attending. Participants will get an opportunity to ask questions.
“This year we are adding something new to our presentations,” said LSSU Financial Aid Director Deb Faust. “We have combined efforts with Sault Area High School for an EduCash event, where we are inviting families to come to LSSU for some one-on-one FAFSA help for six Fridays – starting January 25 and running through March 1 -- at the LSSU Fletcher Center. The goal is to increase the number of FAFSA filers from Sault High as well as other high schools in the area.”
“We are trying to do a little more this year for area students,” Faust said. “Our Newberry Financial Aid Night has been changed this year to include a combined financial aid workshop and FAFSA filing session there. The students are being asked to bring in their notepads and after the 20-minute FAFSA update, we are going to invite them to start filling out this year’s form at that time.”
