SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State University Enactus team was named a regional champion at the Enactus U.S. Regional Competition held April 12 in Chicago. The event is one of 10 regional competitions being held across the country in March and April.
Formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise, Enactus has a long history on the LSSU campus. The organization is a community of student, academic and business leaders committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to enable human progress. The group establishes student programs on college campuses across the nation. At LSSU and elsewhere, Enactus students apply business concepts to develop community outreach projects, transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.
LSSU's 2013 Enactus Team
LSSU’s Enactus team is one of more than 500 programs in the U.S. The group has been known on campus for the entrepreneurs it has brought in to speak over the years, as well as its project to help area residents with their income tax returns. The students are also known for their monthly grilled Pino’s sausage fundraisers on campus.
During this past academic year, the team organized five projects in the Sault Ste. Marie community, including: the Merit Badge College, Computers for Cameroon, the Healthy Kids Project with St. Mary’s Elementary School, the Roots Project with Malcolm High School, and the Green Project with Cloverland Electric Cooperative and local coffee shops.
The culmination of the Enactus program is an annual series of competitions that provide a showcase for teams to present the results of their projects and be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet at the Enactus World Cup.
As an Enactus Regional Champion, the Lake State team now advances to the 2013 Enactus U.S. National Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri, May 21-23.
