LSSU COAST GUARD INTERNSHIP – Lake Superior State University fire science professor James Scheafer, left, and Captain Steven Teschendorf, commander U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, sign a volunteer service agreement on July 9 that sets up an internship opportunity at the base in Sault Ste, Marie, Mich. The inaugural internship has LSSU student Robert Perry, center, working with Sector Sault's planning office on risk assessment contingency planning. The analysis is part of a broader assessment of how regional local, state, and federal agencies coordinate and standardize emergency operating procedures with each other. Chris Royal, standing right, is a port security specialist who oversees the effort for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Sector Sault's Education Services Officer Brian Streichert, standing left, helped broker the internship. Perry, from Rockford, Mich., is a senior in criminal justice with a focus on homeland security. Click here to read a Coast Guard press release about the agreement. (LSSU/John Shibley)
