SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Advancements in technology mean new ways of doing everything, including introducing innovative ways of telling new and prospective students about Lake Superior State University. Through the month of August, LSSU will offer an audio “mobile tour” of parts of campus through a trial service that is available through cell phones.
Offered through OnCell, the cell phone tour of LSSU includes “stops” in the Walker Cisler Center, Norris Center, and Crawford Hall of Science, where descriptions and information are made available through cell phones when visitors dial in and follow a variety of prompts for information. LSSU is running the trial for a month to see how it is received by students and the public.
Cell phone tours are offered throughout the world at museums, parks and other tourist attractions. LSSU Admissions staff see the tour as a good way to give students and visitors an introduction to LSSU, with the option to follow-up for official campus tours with more information. The information in the tour can be changed as needed.
“We want to expand our services to students and visitors, as well as enable them to access information at their convenience, on the phone,” said Al Case, director of LSSU Admissions. “After the 30-day trial period, we will assess the usage and comments. If people use it and like it enough for us to make it a permanent part of the campus experience, we may expand it to include more information on other parts of campus.”
Currently, there are three “stops” on the LSSU audio tour and there are Quick Response (QR) codes at all stops that will take users to the tour’s website on their smart phones. Dial 585-421-7338 and then press 1, 2, or 3 to get information on Cisler, Norris or Crawford, respectively. The tour is free, but normal cell phone usage rates apply. The tour’s website address is www.myoncell.mobi/5854217338.
