Posted: November 26th, 2013

THIS REALLY WORKS! – Zachary Wilcox and Lilly Alaspa of Team Blizzard Wizards sport smiles of relief as Soo Township's robotic creation clears a hurdle during the fifth annual FIRST LEGO League regional tournament hosted at Lake Superior State University on Nov. 23 in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. Elementary and middle school teams from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan entered Lego creations that had to use optical and mechanical sensors to steer themselves through an obstacle course. This year's competition theme was Nature's Fury - preparing for and rebuilding after natural disasters. This was the fifth year Soo Township has fielded a team. They took the Core Values trophy as well as the tournament championship. Soo Township now advances along with Petoskey's team to the FIRST LEGO League state tournament on Dec. 14 in Flint, Mich. Judge for the theme awards (presentation and innovation) were Sault Ste. Marie Fire Chief Jason Thorpe; Steven Keck, a civilian with the Coast Guard serving as the contingency preparedness specialist; and Tim McKee, director of the Chippewa County Emergency Management and 911 Central Dispatch. Teamwork judges included Tom Linhart, head coach of LSSU's men's and women's tennis teams, along with Danielle Reveley and Allison Traczyk from LSSU's women's softball. Robot design judges were LSSU students Kelsey Artley of Sault Ste. Marie. Mich., (geology); Trace Hill of Roscommon, Mich., (computer engineering); and Blake Dansforth of St. Joseph, Mich., (computer engineering). Members of Sault High's FIRST Robotics team #1596 also assisted, along with LSSU elementary and secondary teaching students. LEGOS ON THE BRAIN – Waves of both confidence and concern break over Petoskey's "Lakeside Legends of the LEGO League" team during the fifth annual FIRST LEGO League regional tournament hosted at Lake Superior State University on Nov. 23 in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. Elementary and middle school teams from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan entered LEGO creations that had to use optical and mechanical sensors to steer themselves through an obstacle course. This year's theme was Nature's Fury - preparing for and rebuilding from natural disasters. The Petoskey rookie-year team was coached by Lance Bailey and won the presentation trophy and came in first runner up. It now advances along with Soo Township to the FIRST LEGO League state tournament on Dec. 14 in Flint, Mich. (Photo by John Shibley)
