LSSU, Sault High to assist college-bound students with FAFSA during College Goal Sunday, Feb 9

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University and Sault Area High School will team up again to present College Goal Sunday, a free workshop on Feb. 9 to help college-bound students and their parents fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a requirement for any student seeking federal college financial aid.
This year's event, one of more than three dozen scheduled statewide, will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Sault Area High School. LSSU and Sault High staff will discuss financial aid and will have computers on hand for students and parents to fill out the FAFSA and submit it online.
College Goal Sunday is a collaborative effort led by the Michigan Department of Education, and the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association to increase the number of students who continue education beyond high school and earn post-secondary degrees. The FAFSA is required of any student seeking federal financial aid including grants, loans, and many scholarships. Last year, thousands of students received assistance at College Goal Sunday events.
“Students must complete and file a FAFSA in order to secure federal financial aid and should file by the March 1 priority date to ensure eligibility for federal and state programs,” said Deb Faust, director of LSSU Financial Aid.
During the College Goal event at Sault High, staff from both the high school and LSSU will be available to guide students and their parents through each step of completing and filing the FAFSA. Students under 23 years of age are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian. Parents and students should bring their completed 2013 Federal tax return (1040) if possible, or their W-2 and 1099 forms. Students will have the opportunity to register for prizes during the event.
Faust said if parents and students cannot attend College Goal Sunday, they may still get help filling out the FAFSA at LSSU during FAFSA Fridays through the rest of February. There will be one-on-one help during all of these sessions that are held from 2-5 p.m. on Fridays in the LSSU Fletcher Center for Student Services.
