SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Sault Ste. Marie’s Sunrise Rotary and Lake Superior State University’s Arts Center will co-host an art competition and show that opens on Friday, April 25, in the LSSU Arts Center gallery with a reception that includes an art auction with music, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages.
The first annual 5x7 Art Show features more than 100 5x7 canvases donated by local Michigan and Ontario artists, with some submissions from Houghton, Mich., and as far as North Carolina. All feature various media on a theme of water and all of its forms.
During the 6:30-8:30 p.m. reception, patrons will have the first opportunity to view and purchase original works of art for $100, The artist’s name will be hidden on all artwork until it is revealed at the end of the show, and the three best, as determined by a local panel of artists, will be awarded $300 for best in show; second place for $200; and third place, $100.
Tickets for the 5x7 Art Show preview reception are $10 each and are available at the LSSU Foundation office or may be purchased from a Sunrise Rotary Club member. Visit lssu.edu/artscenter/5x7 or contact Sunrise Rotary Committee Chair Sherry Brooks at 906-322-7249 for more details. Tickets are also available at the door.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the LSSU Arts Center gallery exhibition programming and the Sunrise Rotary Club’s mission to support global clean water projects and other local initiatives, such as supplying dictionaries for third-graders, supporting competitive swimming events, and hosting winter family fun nights.
The exhibit will be on display from April 25 through May 23, 12-4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
