ADOPT-A-SOLDIER -- Earlier in the spring, Lake Superior State University's Housing and Residential Life staff launched an Adopt-A-Solider campaign that encouraged students to fill one-gallon plastic bags with necessary and useful items such as shampoo, deodorant, bar soap, tissue, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more, along with some treats such as hard candy. Students filled 66 bags over a month and sent them to members of the Michigan National Guard's 1460th Transportation Company serving in Afghanistan. The unit is based in Midland, Mich. The campaign was headed by LSSU resident advisors and fisheries and wildlife management seniors Samantha Griffin (on left) from North Branch, Mich., and Abby Schoonyan, from Bellville, Ohio. At least one member of the 1460th sending a note to the students, saying that he was grateful for "the students of Lake Superior State for putting in the effort and time to send packages to the troops."
