Silver-Anniversary Golf Classic benefits Laker Club, Fund for LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s 25th annual Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Golf Classic in support of the Laker Club and the Fund for LSSU was held May 31-June 1 at Boyne Mountain Resort.

The event attracted more than 110 alumni and friends of Lake Superior State, who have raised more than $500,000 in support of the university and its students over the 25-year history of the event.

This year's highlights included a live auction during Saturday night's Classic Bash that featured four tickets for a Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field; a Detroit Red Wing hockey jersey signed by Henrik Zetterberg; and Reggie Bush-autographed Detroit Lions football. About 50 items were sold throughout the weekend and, when combined with the proceeds from a raffle, generated $13,000. A $1,500 travel voucher, iPad mini, and $200 cash were given away as raffle prizes.

LSSU Mascot Seamore presented some special silver anniversary awards over the weekend that recognized long-term supporters of the Classic.

Sunday's golf scramble took place on Boyne Mountain's Monument course. Taking first place with a score of 57 in the A Flight were David Jahn, Dale Immel, Bobby Downs and Richard Bowerman. Second place in A Flight was the foursome of Kevin Cooper, Brian Cooper, Craig Cooper and Hugh Pobur with a 58.

In the B Flight, Gary McClellan, Tony Bosbous, Steve Perry, Dick Wallis and Marty Eckhardt took first with a score of 58. Rick Fitzpatrick, Chuck Cliff, Chuck Schmidt and Pete Schmidt placed second with a score of 59.

The Mixed Team winners were Sandi Steensma, Ron Steensma, Martha Cousino and Gary Cousino with a score of 60, followed by Mark Mercer, Cheryl Schlehuber, Rob Winkelman and Philip Ruegg with a 65. The Women’s winners were Nichole Matkovich, Sandra Collins, Darla Dean and Barb Terry scoring 66.

Winners in the Soo Shooters Flight were the team known as “The Firm” consisting of Dan Parker, Greg Potter, Larry Potter and Gordon Evey.

Special event winners were Andrew Markstrom, longest drive, and David Jahn for closest to the pin. The women’s special event winners were Sandra Collins, longest drive and Barb Terry, Closest to the Pin.

Soo Motors sponsored the Hole-in-One contest, with David Jahn being the closest with a shot that bounced off the pin on Hole Three on the Monument Course.
