Redefining the Classroom

Michigan high schoolers garner leadership skills during week-long camp

Posted: July 12th, 2014

WRITE ON LEADERSHIP – High schooler Riley Hoffman, from Petoskey, Mich., helps his group through an exercise on July 10 that defines the best qualities of leadership, as jotted down by everyone on the large paper he is holding. More than 20 high school students from Detroit, Flint, Bay City, Petoskey, Traverse City, Boyne, Ypsilanti, and Mancelona attended Lake Superior State University's inaugural summer leadership camp July 7-10, hosted by the LSSU Edventures summer camp office. The camp focused on principles from Five Practices for Exemplary Leaders, as developed by authors and consultants Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Joe Loomis and Nic Harrington, both with LSSU's student life office, facilitated the camp. Run a Web search on "LSSU summer camps" for a complete listing of other Edventure camps offered through August, or call Julia Roque at 906-635-6673. (LSSU/Kati Doty)
