BULLISH ON THE SOO – Sault Ste. Marie SmartZone President Eric Becks and Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Executive Director Kristen Claus pose with “e-Cities” five-star city and top-performing entrepreneurial awards for Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., presented by the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Center for Innovation Research. The annual eCities research project, which began in 2007, assembles a six-factor, 32-item index of entrepreneurial activity, looking at such factors as clustering, incentives, growth, policies, community and education. Sault Ste. Marie is one of only six Michigan communities named as positive role models for the strategies employed to foster entrepreneurial growth and economic growth. Becks embodies Lake Superior State University’s contribution to regional economic growth. He runs LSSU’s Product Development Center, which has labs and work areas not only on campus but also in the SmartZone technology accelerator building, where this picture was taken. LSSU also provides expertise through faculty-supervised senior projects in engineering, business, and marketing. Industrial clients include India’s Essar Steel and Michigan’s Moran Iron Works, as well as sectors of the state’s automotive industry. Run a Web search on “LSSU senior projects” for details.
