Lake State hosts memorial to fallen law enforcement officers

Posted: May 19th, 2017

FOR THE FALLEN - A memorial bell waits to be rung 86 times for each law regional law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty since 1885. More than three dozen state, federal, and provincial law enforcement agencies and departments from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin, and northern Ontario attended a peace officers memorial ceremony May 18 at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The event, held in conjunction with National Police Week, established by President Kennedy in 1963, also included a wreath-laying by families of slain officers and the transfer of a traveling memorial plaque from Marquette to Chippewa counties.
