PHONATHON BEGINS -- Members of Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS) are volunteering their time to raise money for the Greater Lake State Fund. This year's fund drive seeks to strengthen student financial aid.
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Lake Superior State University students are hitting the phones to ask alumni and friends for support of the Greater Lake State Fund, which provides dollars for financial aid programs that assist LSSU students.
The focus on financial aid is new, according to Mark Jastorff, vice president for Institutional Advancement.
"The LSSU Foundation Board of Directors, recognizing the need for scholarship and other forms of financial aid, has shifted the purpose of this fund from general use to directly helping Lake State students," said Jastorff. "The amount of each gift is not as important as is the fact that together we can accomplish so much more for our students."
Traditionally, the campaign garners around $60,000 annually. The drive has already netted almost $20,000 in contributions. Volunteer callers with Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS) hope to set new standards for giving to the campaign at a time when the need for scholarships and financial aid has never been greater.
