SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Thomas and Penny Underwood of Danville, Mich., were honored as the 2004 Bud and Mary Mansfield Parents of the Year Award recipients during Lake Superior State University’s Great Lake State Weekend homecoming and alumni gathering. This year’s honorees are parents of Lance Underwood, a sophomore majoring in English.

The award, sponsored by Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS) and LSSU’s student life office, was presented at the annual parents luncheon on Saturday, October 9, as part of Great Lake State Weekend.

Each year, LSSU students are encouraged to nominate their parents through an essay. A selection committee comprised of LSSU alumni, faculty, staff and students decides which nomination merits the award.

“This year’s essays were of very high quality,” says Ashleigh Balon, a junior from Bellaire, Mich., who chaired the selection committee. “Lance’s words struck home with the committee.”

The Underwoods are that seventh recipients of the award, which was first presented in 1998.

The Mansfields are long-time LSSU advocates. Bud, a retired director of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce and former Sault businessman, is a member of the Sault Branch Pioneer Class of 1948. Mary has been active as a volunteer through the years in the Sault and with the University. All eight of the Mansfield children attended Lake State and most of their sons and daughters-in-laws are LSSU alumni as well.
