SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s Alumni Association has presented former Laker hockey player and 1989/1992 alumnus Anthony Palumbo with its Paul Ripley Award for Young Alumni.
The award was presented at the annual leadership banquet sponsored by the LSSU Student Government. Palumbo, who earned two degrees from LSSU -- a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics in 1989 and a master’s degree in business administration in 1992 -- is vice president-senior business banker at Huntington Bank in Traverse City.
“Anthony epitomizes this award, which is presented to graduates who have enjoyed exceptional professional and person success early in their careers,” said Mark Jastorff, vice president for Student Life and Alumni Relations at LSSU. “He continues to make his mark in the profession and has been very active with his university. We are proud to recognize his accomplishments with this award.”
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. native has been in the banking business since 1990, when he joined First of America in Sault, Mich. He moved to North Country Bank and Trust in Traverse City in 1994 where he was executive vice president. He accepted new responsibilities in 2002 with Bank One as vice president - relationship manager before moving to his current position with Huntington Bank.
In making the presentation, Frank Anzalone, Palumbo's head coach during his hockey career at LSSU, described Palumbo as a player who possessed an incredible work ethic and brains to go with it. Palumbo was captain of the 1988 NCAA championship Lakers and finished his playing days as the fifth-leading scorer in LSSU history.
The Laker great recently completed his second season as the head hockey coach for Traverse City West High School.
Palumbo serves on the LSSU Foundation board of directors and has been active with several special projects on behalf of his alma mater.
The Paul Ripley Award for Young Alumni is named for the LSSU’s first alumni director. Ripley, a member of the first class at the Sault Branch of Michigan Tech in 1946, held several positions during his tenure at LSSC including director of Career Planning and Placement, and director of College Relations. An associate professor of journalism, Ripley established the Laker Log alumni magazine and published it for more than 20 years. The publication remains a vital link between LSSU and alumni today.
Ripley retired in 1987 after more than 20 years of service.
