Accessibility Services: Best Practices and the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended in 2008

LSSU considers the following as Best Practices according to the Americans with Disabilities Act:

All students who identify themselves to faculty as having a disability or suspect that they have a disability are encouraged to contact Accessibility Services (AS) at 906-635-2355.

Faculty are not obligated to provide accommodations without proper notification from the AS office.  Students may  contact AS staff by telephone to make an intake appointment.

AS uses a proactive approach in assuring compliance with ADA and public law 504.  You can find more information at

AS shows sensitivity and respect for the needs and feelings of others. Everyone deserves unconditional, positive regard.

The AS goal is to collaborate with students to identify, reduce, or eliminate barriers to obtaining education within the most integrated settings possible here at LSSU.

Students are asked to provide written documentation that supports that a disability currently exists and substantially limits one or more life’s basic activities.

The first priority of AS is to get to know each student individually to determine appropriate accommodations and suggest helpful strategies and resources.

English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Limited Learner (ELL) students are not considered disabled under ADA or any other federal laws. AS will not accommodate these students as if they were disabled.
