Innovative Idea to Reality – Business Concept Competition for Community College Students

The Entrepreneurship Competition for Community College Students is a one-day, on-campus, new product concept or innovative business idea competition promoting student entrepreneurship. Competitors from community colleges across Michigan and Ontario receive expert feedback, coaching, and a prize package of cash and crucial in-kind business support services, to launch and grow their ventures.

The program, underwritten by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and America’s SBDC Michigan, provides students with an immensely impactful and immersive experiential business competition.

How to Register

  1. Student teams MUST bring their idea/concept to the appropriate faculty in their community college, for advice and guidance.
  2. Student teams work together to develop a new product concept or innovative business idea.
  3. Register to attend Get Real!
  4. Community college faculty member must follow the instructions found within confirmation email.

Competition Schedule

10:00 am – Register at the R. W. Considine Hall, Lukenda School of Business office

10:10 am – Presentations by College of Innovations & Solutions faculty

  • Concisely describe your idea
  • Describe your solution
  • Describe your customer

11:30 am – Faculty and students available to work with teams

12:30 pm – Lunch at Walker Cisler Center Quarter Deck with participating faculty/students

1:00 pm – Faculty and students resume work with teams. Note: School Engineering & Technology CAD lab and students available to make basic CAD models if needed.

2:00 pm – Present a one page plan to panel (5 min / team)

  • What is the ‘pain’ to be solved?
  • Who is the customer?
  • How will it be marketed?

3:30 pm – Top 5 teams announced

  • Break for snacks
  • Top teams prepare

4:15 pm – Top 5 teams present, in random order

  • 10 minutes for expanded presentation
  • 5 minutes for Q&A from panel
  • Panel confers for 20 minutes

Winners are announced

  • Business Idea 1st place: $500 (Sponsored by Sault EDC)
  • Business Idea 2nd place: $300
  • Business Idea 3rd place: $200
  • Best Product Idea: $500, plus 5 hours of LSSU Product Development Center Consulting
