Fire Science: Outstanding Alumni

Fire Science and Paramedic Graduate to Join Israeli Defense Force

Nathan Chomsky will be going to Jerusalem to begin a pre-military training program for overseas volunteers. Following that, in he will be joining the Israeli Defense Force where he hopes to be chosen as a combat medic.

“I know that the lessons and skills that I have learned while here at LSSU will help me succeed in both this endeavor and any that come after that,” stated Chomsky.

Originally from Southfield, Michigan, he came to LSSU because of the reputation of the Fire Science program. Chomsky stated, “Courses in the Fire Science and Paramedic Programs have been enlightening. I have been able to learn theory in the classroom and apply it through hands on courses such as the firefighter certification course and in my paramedic clinicals.”

Mr. Chomsky accounts that this practical application is something he feels sets the degrees apart from many others. The practical component is crucial to the theoretical one. “I can’t imagine having to sit in class for four years before using any of the knowledge. I have been working at the student call team for the LSSU Foundation for the past four years and have been manager there for the last three. I enjoy working there because I get the opportunity to talk to alumni from all walks of life, in many different fields and positions.”

Mr. Chomsky accounts that becoming involved in university service is important to the early foundations of community service. “In my freshman year, I became involved with Beta Nu Xi, a local fraternity on campus. Throughout my time with the fraternity I have been able to work on leadership skills, event organization, and had an opportunity to participate in many community service events.”

Mr. Chomsky has had a successful academic career at LSSU, and will graduated in the top tier of his cohort. Mr. Chomsky will be recognized as an Outstanding Fire Science Graduate at the School of CJ/FS/EMS.

Graduates of the fire science program are now working as fire chiefs, inspectors, homeland security officers, safety officers with industry and other government agencies, and training officers in many settings. Graduates have also gone on to pursue masters’ degrees and doctoral degrees as well.
