Scholarship Sign-up for current students in programs in Criminal Justice and Fire Science

These scholarships are open to LSSU students in programs in Criminal Justice and Fire Science.

These scholarships are intended to recognize undergraduate students who did not win an award upon entering LSSU or to upgrade LSSU scholarships for those students who have performed well after at least one year (26 credits earned) of LSSU study but not more than 124 credits. Students with other LSSU scholarships may “upgrade” to a scholarship with higher value but generally may not combine scholarships, unless their current LSSU scholarship is $1,000 or less per year.

Stephen Bell Memorial Scholarship

The named scholarship is established by friends and family of Steve Bell, a 1991 graduate of the LSSU criminal justice program and member of the Lapeer City fire department and public safety office in Bloomfield Hills. On the day he died, Steve had just completed a 24-hour shift. He died at the scene of an automobile accident on February 7, 2003 at the age of 33. Steve loved his family, friends, and fellow police officers and fellow Lapeer City firefighters. He had a natural gift of humor and was very proud of being a graduate of Lake Superior State University.

  • Value: Up to two $1,000 - renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; Michigan resident; must have earned 26 LSSU credits, minimum 3.0 GPA; preference given to students with financial need and residents from the Eastern Upper Peninsula
  • Curriculum: fire science; if not available, a student majoring in criminal justice may be considered
  • Selected by: recommendation of the School of Criminal Justice and Fire Science

John Weir (Sault Police Department) Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor John Weir and to provide financial support for LSSU students graduating from the LSSU Criminal Justice program enrolling in the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) skills completion academy. John Weir served with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department for nineteen years. On September 23, 1990, he responded to a call that involved a man threatening others with a knife and was stabbed resulting in injuries that left him in a coma for several months. After coming out of the coma, Detective Weir remained partially paralyzed until his death on November 7, 2004.

  • Value: $25 - non-renewable
  • Must be a graduate from the LSSU Criminal Justice Program
  • Must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Active in extracurricular activities and exhibits outstanding citizenship
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are the first to attend LSSU in their family
