Redefining the Classroom

Great Lake State Weekend

Detailed Schedule of Events

Saturday October 27, 2012

Saturday, October 27

LSSU’s Alumni Association Board of Directors will be starting their Annual Meeting
bright and early at 9:00 am Saturday. This group of volunteers is dedicated to improving
programs and services for Laker alumni. Have you got an idea for them? Email us and we’ll
make sure they get it.

Start your morning with a 5k run or stroll through campus – join us for the 14th annual Campus Challenge 5k Fun Run/Walk, beginning at 10:00am. This is not a competitive race, but the distance is accurately measured. All pre-registered participants will receive a cool long-sleeve tee and door prizes will be awarded randomly to finishers. Register online for the Campus Challenge, or download a pdf and print it out.

Time to update your Laker attire? Check out Barnes & Noble at LSSU some time today- they have special store hours for GLSW, 10:00am to 5:00pm. Check your registration packet for a special B&N discount coupon, good only this weekend.

Stop by LSSU’s Quarterdeck Cafeteria for brunch – 11:30am to 1:00pm. Get a special discounted price when you register
for GLSW.

If you have young ones along and you’re looking for ways to keep them occupied and happy, we are here for you with Kids Kollege. Kids Kollege is two hours of activities both fun and educational for youngsters age 6 to 12. Organized and supervised by LSSU students and staff, this is a worry-free way to send your younger ones off while you kick back and relax or enjoy grownup  activities. Meet at the Registration desk in Cisler Lobby and leave your kids in our hands from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Parents and older siblings are welcome to accompany children under 6.

Remember the Planetarium? It’s still here, but the shows have been updated. Check out the latest Planetarium Show at 3:30pm in Crawford Hall.
Have you ever seen LSSU’s famous Aquatic Research Lab? This is a one-of-a-kind facility, providing incredible hands-on opportunities for LSSU biology and fish and wildlife students, giving them the edge when seeking jobs in the fisheries field. Tour the ARL on Saturday from 2:30 to 4:00pm! You can drive down to the lab adjacent to the old Edison powerhouse on Portage Avenue; or catch the Laker shuttle bus departing from the Library Parking Lot as needed during this time. Check out the underwater fish-cam to see fish swimming by live in the St. Mary’s River.

The highlight of the weekend will be- our annual Alumni Awards banquet, where we will recognize three alumni and a good friend
of the university. Join us at 4:30pm as we honor:

Outstanding Alumnus – Daniel T. Laur '75

Kenneth J. Shouldice Alumni Achievement Award – Thomas W. Ewing '73
Paul Ripley Young Alumna Award – Heather J. Benjamin '01
Donald & Catherine Finlayson Award – Precision Edge Surgical Products

Reserve your ticket for the Alumni Awards banquet

The Awards Banquet will conclude in time for interested parties to head back over to the Taffy Abel for round two of the hockey series with MSU. The game begins at 7:05pm.

The fun is not over after the final puck drops! Head downtown and check out your old haunts during the Alumni Pub Crawl and Poker Run. Members of your Alumni Board will be holding down the fort at various establishments downtown, waving the Laker flag and giving away small gifts to random alumni who come over and greet them. Get a list of participating taverns at the registration table, or look for the banners welcoming Laker alumni back to Sault Ste. Marie establishments, new and old.
