Function and Responsibility
The president serves as the chief executive and administrative officer of the University at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees, or under contract for such term as the Board may determine.

The president leads, administers, manages, operates, develops, preserves and generally supervises all aspects of University operations, including all expenditures of the institution's funds, with authority from and responsibility to the Board of Trustees of the University.

The president serves as an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees, without the right to vote.

The president serves, by virtue of position, as a Director of the Lake Superior State University Foundation.

The president may teach academic courses at his/her discretion.

The president may serve ex officio as a member of Board of Trustees committees.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
In accordance with all applicable Board of Trustees policies and by-laws, and University procedures, the president is expected:

To provide overall direction and leadership for the University.

To maintain, develop and promote the goals, purposes and mission of the University.

To recommend to the Board of Trustees goals, policies and practices that will best serve the interests and educational mission of the University.

To inform the Board of Trustees of matters concerning the operation and welfare of the University.

To represent the University and foster positive relations with all its various constituencies, local and regional, including Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, state and national.

To coordinate all operational areas of the University.

To coordinate all short- and long-range planning for the University.

To negotiate and enter into agreements.

To coordinate all institutional communications to the Board of Trustees.

To disclose to the Board of Trustees all financial and budgetary matters, conditions and proposals.

To recommend personnel actions to the Board of Trustees.

To take personnel actions, as required.

To protect the legal interests of the University.

To represent the University to the legislative and executive branches of state government.

To maintain relationships with appropriate state and federal agencies.

To promote charitable gifts and donations to the University and the LSSU Foundation.

To disseminate information about the University and its programs and activities to the public.

To keep abreast of issues and developments in the field of higher education, and maintain professional competence.

To delegate these listed duties to others, on a discretionary basis, while retaining the overall responsibility for the successful performance of these duties and any other duties assigned by the Board of Trustees.

To reside on the campus in University housing provided by the Board of Trustees, at no cost, in order to be "on-call" and to entertain guests on behalf of the University.
