Fire Science with Honors...

SavannahSue Rondeau SavannahSue Rondeau has always been interested in firefighting. For the last three years she has been a volunteer firefighter in her hometown of Oakdale, Minnesota.

"I love the fast pace environment, the people in the profession, and the adrenaline rush of running into a burning building or saving someone’s life," she says.

Rondeau chose Lake Superior State University because it offers the first accredited four-year fire science degree in the United States. She also jumped at the challenge of LSSU's Honors program, which requires her to complete 21 Honors credits, including 10 credits for an Honors seminar/thesis project.

"My long term plans are to move to a large city and become a medical chief or arson investigator," she says.

"The Honors program has helped tremendously at LSSU. I live in Honors House, Ontario Hall, and I quickly made good friends who showed me all about campus life. In addition, being in small honors classes gave me connections to learn from not only professors, but the other students as well. Honors classes and seminars are at a higher level that does require more work on top of regular classes. However, the payoff is knowing I can compete and do all that is expected of me while still maintaining good grades in other classes. The big payoff will be when I earn a degree with Honors."
