Tim Ayers, Professional Advisory Board
Mr. Timothy Ayers graduated from LSSU in December of 1990, with a Bachelor in Science.
He studied Mechanical Engineering Tech and Business Administration.
He Lives in his hometown of Mason, MI and is the President of Fluid Chiller, Inc. Located in Lansing, MI.

Ms. Sue A. Bowlby, CPA

Sue Bowlby, Professional Advisory BoardMs. Sue A. Bowlby has over twenty-five years of public accounting experience with Anderson, Tackman & Company, PLC and five years of private accounting experience.

Some of the industries she has served are: Public Accounting, Corporations, Non-profit Pension Plans, and Governmental Units. Some of the professional activities Ms. Bowlby is active in are the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mr. James (Jay) Brogan III (Vice-Chair)

Jay Brogan, Professional Advisory BoardJay Brogan graduated from Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and an Associate of Science degree in Computer Engineering Technology.  Jay is the President and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Hiawatha Communications Incorporated (HCI), which is headquartered in Munising, Michigan.  Jay is also a Vice President and Managing Partner of Peninsula Fiber Network LLC, which is located in Marquette, Michigan.  Jay has served on the Board of Directors of the Telecommunications Association of Michigan (TAM) for 20 years and has served as Chairman of the Board of TAM for two terms.  Jay has worked in the communications industry and for the HCI family of companies for over 30 years.  Jay and his wife Maureen (Gries) Brogan, who graduated from LSSU in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Business, reside in Munising where they have raised three children Jake, Joe, and Paige.

Ms. Patricia L. Caruso

Pat Caruso

Patricia L. Caruso spent 23 years with the Michigan Department of Corrections including nine years as a warden and almost eight years as the Director of the Department, serving as a cabinet member to Governor Jennifer Granholm. She retired from the Department on January 1, 2011.

Director Caruso received a B.A. in political science and sociology from Lake Superior State University and a Master of Arts in comprehensive occupational education from the University of Michigan. She is currently the Chair of the Foundation Board, and a member of the Professional Advisory Board, at Lake Superior State University.

Director Caruso and her husband, Stan, have been married for forty years and make their home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They are the parents of two grown children and have three grandchildren.

Mr. Kerry M. Jones

Kerry Jones was born and raised in Cheboygan, Michigan.  He graduated from Ferris State University in 1984, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Insurance). Kerry invested his entire 32-year career in the insurance industry,  retiring from his independent insurance agency in 2016.  Kerry holds the designation of Certified Insurance Counselor, and is a Licensed Insurance Counselor and a licensed resident insurance agent in the state of Michigan.  Kerry is married to Valerie and has two children, Douglas and Rita.  Douglas is a 2015 graduate of LSSU, and Rita currently attends Bethel University.

Ms. Brenda S. Lippens

Brenda Lippens, Professional Advisory BoardBrenda S. Lippens is a 1987 graduate from LSSU with a bachelors in Accounting. She also received her MBA through LSSU in 1992. She has been both the President and the CEO at Delta County Credit Union since 2002. Prior to that, she worked for a community bank for 17 years. Along with serving on the PAB at LSSU, she also serves on Bay College’s Accounting Advisory board since 1989; the Delta County Chamber of Commerce board of directors and various other professional boards. She and her husband have two daughters who are both in college. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time at their cottage in her spare time.

Ms. JoAnne Lussier

JoAnne Lussier, Professional Advisory Board JoAnne Lussier is in her ninth year as Director of Career Technical Education at Sault Area High School and Career Center. This is her 19th year in the district. She has taught Business Education at the high school and Malcolm High School, computers at the middle school and computers grades k-8 at St. Mary’s School before moving to administration.

JoAnne attended LSSU and received an Associate’s Degree in Office Administration before transferring to Northern Michigan University to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education. She received her Master’s Degree from Ferris State University in CTE Administration.

Prior to returning to education, she spent many years in California working for Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in Marketing, Sales and Public Relations. The birth of their first child brought her and her husband back to Sault Ste. Marie, MI where they currently live with their two children, Cole and Emma. Cole plays hockey for Trine University and is majoring in Civil Engineering. Emma is a junior at Sault Area High School and an active member of Business Professionals of America.

Ms. Cathy Mason

Cathy Mason, Professional Advisory Board

Cathy Mason joined the Lake Superior State University Professional Advisory Board in 2012.

She graduated from Lake Superior State University in 1980, starting her career at Central Savings Bank in 1978 as a clerk-typist working her way up to her current position as a Sr. Vice President and Secretary to the Board of Directors.

Cathy is a member of the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.  She enjoys volunteering for the Road to Recovery, Friends of Bayliss, Soo High Concessions, and the Relay for Life.  She also enjoys traveling, is certified in scuba diving, and loves to garden.

Cathy lives in Brimley, Michigan with her husband, Steve.  They have been married 39 years and have two children.

Ms. Marilyn Kapp Moran

Ms. Marilyn Kapp MoranGrowing up in a family business, Marilyn Kapp Moran brings years of experience in public relations and customer service. She has worked in both public and private business sectors and brings her varied network of educational, non-profit and corporate connections together for the benefit of Michigan Iron Works (MIW) and its corporate divisions.

She is responsible for leading the sales, estimating and marketing team and creating strategy to strengthen both MIW’s standing in the marketplace and its corporate business development. She is also instrumental in business plan creation and grant writing.

Marilyn is Board President of the Industrial Arts Institute, Onaway, MI; Member of Michigan Governor’s Talent and Investment Board (GTIB); GOP Precinct Delegate for Cheboygan County; Advisory Board Member for Lake Superior State University; Board of Directors of McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation and recently named to the Governor’s MiSTEM Council.

She is a Hospitality Graduate of Southeastern Academy, Kissimmee, FL, a Certified Master Gardner and a Certified Grant Writer, Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI

Ms. Katie Pepin

Kathryn Pepin is the Controller of Precision Edge Surgical Products Company LLC. She joined Precision Edge in November 2004, and was promoted to Controller in October 2011. Kathryn was a Board of Control Distinguished Scholarship Recipient for Lake Superior State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1988 with honors. She earned her Certified Public Accountant Certificate in August of 1991. She has over 30 years of diverse experience in Public, Tax, Non-Profit, ERP System and Manufacturing Accounting.

Mr. Garrett Urman

Garrett Urman is a Commercial Banking Officer for Chemical Bank, working out of the company’s Petoskey, MI, location. A graduate of Lake Superior State University in 2010, he began his banking career with The Bank of Northern Michigan (now a part of Chemical Bank) starting out in the Bank’s Professional Development Program, focusing on commercial credit and analysis.  In late 2012, he transitioned into the role of Commercial Banking Officer.  Garrett’s focus as a Commercial Banking Officer is to be a trusted financial partner to his clients, helping them to achieve their goals and dreams. Garrett is actively involved with Harbor Light Community Chapel as a member of their finance team as well as assisting with their youth group programs. Garrett was born and raised in Northern Michigan and enjoys spending time with his family as well as hunting, fishing, camping, and being active in the outdoors.

Ms. Sara Cottle

Sara Cottle, Professional Advisory BoardSara Cottle is the Operations Manager at Chippewa County Credit Union, and has been working in the credit union industry since 1999. Sara is a 2015 graduate of Lake Superior State University with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. She received a Certified Credit Union Executive designation from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) at the University of Madison, Wisconsin in 2010, and later a Credit Union Compliance Expert certification. Sara lives near Pickford with her husband and two children, and enjoys volunteering with a variety of community organizations.

Mr. Daniel Hollingsworth

Daniel Hollingsworth, Professional Advisory BoardDaniel (Dan) Hollingsworth brings a wealth of experience and a new perspective to the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC). Dan was appointed to the role of Director, Strategic Initiatives in the fall of 2013 and he was appointed as the Executive Director, Business Development in 2014 . He is responsible for coordinating a number of key initiatives, including the successful business retention and expansion program, management and the delivery of international relations and investment attraction portfolio, and the management of the organization’s business support services.

Prior to joining the SSMEDC, Dan worked at FedNor Industry Canada for 12 years. During his term with the Federal Government’s Northern Ontario economic development organization, he was responsible for the development of key portfolios and developing community-based initiatives. Before joining FedNor, Dan was President of RAPIDS Community Investment Inc., a non-profit organization aimed at improving the accessibility of financing and growth-oriented firms in Sault Ste. Marie. Prior to that, he was a Regional Manager with NORCAM Currency Exchange Ltd., based in London, Ontario.

Mr. Peter Petainen

Peter Petainen International Bridge Administration Mr. Peter Petainen is the General Manager of the International Bridge Administration (IBA), an administrative entity within the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) responsible for the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. Peter reports to the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority Board of Directors, comprised of 4 Canadian members and 4 Michigan members, equally representing the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd and the State of Michigan.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Lake Superior State University. Prior to becoming IBA General Manager in 2016, Peter also held careers as the IBA Chief Financial Officer, an independent auditor in Michigan, a licensed commercial pilot, and served as an officer in the Canadian Forces.

He is the 2010 professional supervisor award recipient of the MDOT Director’s Award.

He is originally from and currently resides in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario with his wife Paula, daughter Ariana, and son Matthew.
