Once again, LSSU business students shine on Major Field Test in Business

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Lake Superior State University business students continue to show that they are some of the best and brightest in the country after several again placed in the top 10 percent of students taking a national business test.
Nine of 58 LSSU students taking the Major Field Test in Business this past year made the top 10 percent.
The MFT is an objective, end-of-program test designed for students majoring in business degree programs. More than 32,000 students from over 430 undergraduate business programs in the U.S. participated in the 2011-2012 testing. This comprehensive assessment tool is designed to measure a student’s critical knowledge and understanding in the areas of accounting, economics, management, quantitative business analysis, finance, marketing, legal and social environment, information systems, and international issues. Questions in the two-hour test represent a wide range of difficulty and provide an in-depth assessment of a student's achievement level.

Based on his individual test scores, David Pawley, an accounting major from Sault Ste. Marie, placed in the top 1% of all test-takers in the 2011-2012 test year. Two other seniors, Magen Umlor, a finance and economics major from St. Johns, and Dawn Sonntag, a finance and economics major from Elizabethton, Tenn., placed in the top 3%.
“The mean score of all LSSU business students who took part in the testing placed the LSSU School of Business in the top 25% rank of all participating undergraduate business schools in the nation,” said David Finley Ph.D., dean of the LSSU College of Business and Engineering. “Particular strengths were noted in accounting, finance and economics, international issues, management, and marketing, where LSSU average scores were five or more points above the national mean.
“We are exceptionally proud of our students and not surprised at how well they did on this national test,” Finley added. “Because of the individual attention they receive in our business program and in every program across campus, our students are successful in graduate school and in their careers.”
In recent years, LSSU students scored in the top 5% of schools in the fields of accounting and economics on the MFT and the top 15% or better in the fields of international education and legal/social education.
