MECHANICAL HAND – Lake Superior State University engineering student Henry Palmer gently eases his team's LEGO Mindstorm® creation onto a track for a test run. Thirteen teams comprised of 63 first-year engineering students developed the devices for a class competition on Dec. 14. Freshman engineers round out every fall semester by cooking up autonomous robots to perform tasks on an obstacle course. Successful machines migrate a maze by laser to drop balls into a target pocket. Palmer is a mechanical engineering major from Howell, Mich. (LSSU/John Shibley)
