Office of Purchasing & Risk Management

Welcome!

The Office of Purchasing & Risk Management strives to serve as a resource to the Lake Superior State University community for the procurement of goods and services. In addition, we are charged with the task of managing the University's insurance programs and minimizing the losses on our campus through proactive education and administration.

The goal of our website is to offer information and resources for the campus and community in the areas of equipment, material and service acquisitions, surplus property management, the puchasing card (p-card) program, insurance, and risk management. As you browse our site and work with our office, please share your feedback on how we can improve!

Role of the Department

Purchasing

The Office of Purchasing & Risk Management, as delegated by the Board of Trustees, provides the means of obtaining needed goods and services based on quantity, quality, service, delivery and competitive market prices. In addition to providing assistance and service to departments in the procurement of goods and services, a major responsibility of the office is to ensure the policies and procedures of the University are properly administered to comply with federal, state and local guidelines.

Our office maintains a listing of suppliers and vendors for the entire campus community. Many catalogs and brochures are available for reference by campus requisitioners. Where a consultation with a supplier representative is desirable, we invite you to work with us to arrange a meeting.

Faculty and staff should convey their needs to the Office of Purchasing via a requisition, indicating the item(s) to be purchased, the quantities needed and a clear, concise description. If needed by a certain date, the date should be specified. The term "as soon as possible" does not convey a meaningful delivery date. "Rush" requisitions should be kept to a minimum and should be restricted to cases involving the breakdown of equipment, or where human life is endangered.

Risk Management

Lake Superior State University is an active member of Michigan University Self-Insurance Corporation (M.U.S.I.C.). Through this organization, the Office of Purchasing & Risk Management strives to offer protection for the campus against losses incurred by accidents or other threats to property and human life. Risk management includes offering a proactive approach through education and administration of policies and procedures.

The LSSU Risk Manager works to analyze and identify risks and potential losses, in consultation with the Office of Public Safety and the Physical Plant. Further, the Office of Purchasing & Risk Management serves to raise awareness of and educate the community on risk issues, loss prevention, and safety. Additionally, our office coordinates insurance coverage for the University community.

Risk management and campus safety are everyone's responsibility. Our office serves as one of the primary resources on campus for these issues and we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
