Project Description: Team Solar Film Innovations (SFI) is tasked with the design, construction, and testing of two Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. The fall design will be an improved system based on Team Heliotech’s, a 2012-2013 LSSU Senior Project team. This design will be tested at Lake Superior State University and then installed at Vermilion Point. The spring design will implement weight reduction and manufacturability improvements based on test results from the fall design. Both BIPV systems will utilize 3M Brand Prestige Window Film to allow visible light to pass through the unit, while reflecting near infrared light onto photovoltaic cells. 3M is sponsoring the spring design of the project and will receive the spring unit upon completion.

Shed used to test solar filmThe major goal of the fall unit is to reduce the need for using the diesel generator at VermilionPoint due to thelocation’s lack of connection to the power grid. The major goal of the spring unit is to present 3M with a BIPV system they can possibly market utilizing their Prestige Window Film in the future.

SFI undertakes this project facing a stern budget, a need to collaborate with multiple industrial contacts, and possible weather challenges in the winter months.

Analysis of 2,4-D in Sediment Samples Taken from Paradise Lake, MI

Two organizations from Paradise Lake, concerned for the environmental quality of Paradise Lake, wanted to test a few methods to help control the population of Eurasian Milfoil to help promote continuing recreational activity in the lake. Each organization had different ideals: one was for natural treatment, the other wanted to explore chemical treatment avenues. One method chosen by the latter organization was chemical treatment using 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acid (2,4-D), a common pesticide, especially in agriculture. To determine whether there was a risk to the lake or surrounding groundwater sources, sediment samples were collected and analyzed for the presence of 2,4-D.
