LSSU Engineering and Technology has about a dozen engineering specific scholarships available ranging from $500 to $2,500.  LSSU also offers numerous additional annual scholarships for engineering students to apply!

For incoming students: The first due date for LSSU Scholarship applications for incoming (new first-time or transfer) students to be considered for the 2024-2025 academic year has passed. Thank you to everyone that has submitted an application. We will be in communication within the coming weeks.

For returning students: The due date for LSSU Scholarship applications for returning students will be April 19, 2024 to be considered for the 2024-2025 academic year. Please submit your application to Dr. David Baumann either in his mailbox in CAS202 or via email at .

Please note that non-LSSU scholarships may have a different application deadline than LSSU scholarships.

Remember: If you fit the criteria, send in an application! Many scholarships go unawarded due to lack of applicants.

Andersen Family Engineering Scholarship (For Incoming Freshmen & Returning Students)

$1,200; Nonrenewable, 4 per year

The purpose of this scholarship is to benefit a student(s) in any engineering-related course of study at Lake Superior State University. The named endowment is established by Mr. Robert G. Andersen, a retired engineering supervisor from Continental (Teves) Automotive Systems.

Bob has been a long-time supporter of LSSU’s engineering and engineering technology programs serving as a senior project sponsor for more than seven years, and providing cooperative and employment opportunities for our students and grads. He received honorary “alumni status” from the department and received the Dr. Donald and Catherine Finlayson Distinguished Citizen Award, the highest award reserved for friends of LSSU.

Eligibility:
Successful candidates are as follows:

  • May be an incoming freshman or returning student meeting the university general entrance requirements
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be a student majoring in any engineering-related course of study
  • Financial need may be considered
  • This is a non-renewable award – however, previous recipients may be considered

Marvin & Audrey Dahlman Engineering Scholarship Endowment (For Incoming Freshmen & Returning Students)

$2,000; Renewable, 1 per year

Marv Dahlman was a member of the LSSU Engineering faculty for 33 years. He began his teaching career in 1952 at what was then the Sault Branch of Michigan Tech. He retired as an Associate Professor from Lake Superior State University in 1985, and was named a Professor Emeritus. Audrey and Marvin were married for 68 years and raised their three children on LSSU’s Faculty Row, where they developed lifelong friendships and an abiding affection for the University. Audrey was employed at Sault Savings Bank, from which she retired as an Assistant Vice-President. She also enjoyed volunteer work, in support of her children’s school activities, the Faith Lutheran Church and the University.

Dulimba Family Engineering Scholarship (For Returning Students)

$1,000; Non-renewable, 1 per year

ADD Software LLC of Auburn Hills, Mich. is the sponsor of this scholarship that seeks to encourage the study of robotics within the electrical and computer engineering programs.

Eligibility:
Successful candidates are as follows:

  • Must be junior status, enrolled full-time in either electrical engineering or computer engineering.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Preference to those with robotics and automation emphasis.
  • Preference to those with financial need.

JR Automation Robotics Scholarship (For Incoming Freshmen & Returning Students)

$1,000; Nonrenewable, 1 per year

Sven V. Heikkinen Engineering Scholarship (For Returning Students)

$500, Nonrenewable, 1 per year

This scholarship was established by Ken and Kate Heikkinen in memory of their son, Sven. Sven Heikkinen was a 1982 graduate from Pickford High School. He graduated from Lake Superior State University in 1993 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was an Engineering Specialist in Vehicle Development working for the Continental-Brimley Development Center. He was also an adjunct professor with LSSU vehicle test dynamics, a driving instructor, a Junior Achievement mentor, and a Dale Carnegie trainer. His unexpected death on June 3, 2007 at the age of 43 left an indelible void on his wife Jodie and his daughters Kirsi and Kinzie and all who knew Sven. He had a genuine love for LSSU and, in particular, the School of Engineering and Technology. It is his parents’ wishes to honor his memory with a scholarship to benefit future LSSU engineering students.

  • Must have a GPA 3.0 or higher

Huizenga Engineering Scholarships (For Incoming Freshmen)

$1,000; Nonrenewable, 1 per year

The intent is to award this scholarship on an annual basis to incoming students who are pursuing an undergraduate engineering education and have demonstrated academic success.

Eligibility:
Scholarship requirements are as follows:

  • Admission to the LSSU engineering or engineering technology program
  • 3.30 minimum grade point average (GPA)
  • 24 minimum ACT composite score or 1160 (out of 1600) minimum SAT score

Lawrence Roy Jacobsen and Dorothy M. Bell Engineering Scholarship (For Incoming Freshmen & Returning Students)

$1,500; Nonrenewable, 2 per year

Dorothy Bell, a graduate of Pickford High School, established this endowed scholarship in memory of her son, Lawrence Roy. Lawrence was a graduate of Sault Area High School and worked as an engineer at Dow Corning. The purpose of this scholarship is to benefit a Sault High graduate who is pursuing an engineering degree at Lake Superior State University.

Eligibility:
A successful candidate:

  • Must be a full-time student majoring in an engineering field of study at Lake Superior State University
  • Must have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must be a graduate of Sault Area High School.

No application is necessary. Eligible names are provided to scholarship committee for selection.

LSSU & FIRST Robotics Scholarship Awards (For Incoming Freshmen)

Up to $2,000; Renewable, 4 per year

FIRST Robotics logoThe intent is to award this scholarship on an annual basis to incoming LSSU freshmen who are pursuing an undergraduate engineering or engineering technology education with a robotics specialty and have demonstrated academic success and interest in the robotics specialty curriculum.

Eligibility: Scholarship requirements are as follows:

  • Admission to an LSSU engineering or engineering technology program
  • Selected option in robotics and automation for engineers, a minor in robotics technology for engineering technologists
  • 3.30 minimum grade point average (GPA)
  • 24 minimum ACT composite score or 1180 (out of 1600) SAT score
  • Demonstrated robotics interest and experience as a participant in robotics competitions or summer camps. Examples include FIRST, MITES, Skills USA, RIA, LSSU Women in Technology or LSSU Robotics camps
  • Short essay describing involvement in FIRST, other extra curricular activities, robotics interest and career plans
  • FIRST: letter of recommendation from FIRST team advisor/coach or summer camp faculty member

This scholarship is renewable for one additional year if the student meets the following criteria:

  • 3.3 minimum GPA (within student’s major)
  • 14 credits minimum per semester
  • enrolled in engineering or engineering technology

John and Jan Madl Manufacturing Engineering Technology Award (For Returning Students)

No new awards for 2022-23

John Madl started teaching in the Engineering Department at the Soo Branch of MTU in 1967 after finishing his MSME at Michigan Technological University. He accepted early retirement in 2002 after 34 years of service to Lake Superior State University.

Jan (Osterhout) Madl was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She received her RN from LSSU in 1982 and has since retired from War Memorial Hospital. They have three children: Janel Wallis, Dawn Cole, and Bryan Madl. They also have three grandsons.

A successful candidate:

  • Must be a returning full-time student majoring in the LSSU manufacturing engineering technology program with at least 26 credits.
  • Must have earned a 2.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must show financial need.

No application is necessary. Eligible names are provided to engineering and technology faculty for selection.

Precision Edge Surgical Products Company Engineering Scholarship (For Returning Students)

$2,500; Nonrenewable; 4 per Year

The world-renowned manufacturer of precision surgical instruments established this scholarship to support students of at least sophomore status majoring in a program of the School of Engineering and Technology at LSSU. Eligibility:
A successful candidate:

  • Must be a student majoring in any LSSU Engineering and Technology degree program
  • Must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be a student in good academic standing (as defined by the University’s catalog), who has earned at least 26 LSSU credits
  • Financial need is a consideration, but not a requirement
  • This is a non-renewable scholarship – however, past recipients may be considered upon meeting the eligibility requirements.

Charlie Snyder IAB Engineering & Technology Scholarship (For Incoming Freshmen)

$1,000; Nonrenewable, 1-4 per year

This endowed scholarship was established to provide financial assistance and recognition to students entering LSSU in either an engineering or technology major. This endowment is named in memory of Charlie Snyder of Delco Electronics.

Eligibility:
A successful candidate:

  • Must be an incoming freshman or transfer student enrolled at LSSU
  • Must be majoring in engineering or engineering technology
  • Must have a high school or transfer GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Incoming freshman with a composite ACT score of 22, SAT score of 1110 (out of 1600), or higher

Floyd and Joyce Starks Memorial Scholarships (For Incoming Freshmen & Returning Students)

$1,200; Nonrenewable, 1-3 per Year

This scholarship was established by Stan Starks, a 1976 LSSU Engineering graduate in memory of his parents, Floyd and Joyce Starks. They were average hard working folks who never had the opportunity to go to college. Nonetheless, they were strong believers in higher education. They were very familiar with Lake Superior State and the Soo from numerous summer vacations. Insistent that their two sons get a college education, they made numerous sacrifices to enable that to happen. They were both very proud of that their sons graduated from LSSU, and they will always be remembered for their sacrifices and unwavering support that made that accomplishment possible.

Eligibility:
Successful candidates are as follows:

  • Must be a full-time student majoring in electrical engineering or computer engineering field of study at Lake Superior State University
  • Must be a US citizen and resident of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, or Wisconsin
  • Must have a 3.25 GPA or higher
  • Returning student candidates must have earned at least 26 LSSU credits
  • This scholarship is non-renewable

AES Engineers Scholarship

Looking for a scholarship based on character instead of GPA? AES Engineering awards a $500 scholarship each year to the winner of an essay competition.

Michigan Society of Professional Engineers Scholarships

$2,000; Nonrenewable, 3 per year

The Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) encourages high school seniors with the talent and commitment to pursue an engineering degree. The scholarships are provided by the generosity of individuals, leading companies and educational institutions. All scholarships are based on merit; and are to be used towards tuition only, applicants must meet minimum criteria to qualify.

Eligibility:

Do you want to make a difference in the life of a student at Lake Superior State University and/or the Laker family?

If so, there are a number of ways to give your time, talents, and/or treasure including:

  • Donate to a LSSU School of Engineering & Technology – related scholarship.
  • Spread the word about the LSSU School of Engineering & Technology to children, especially in grades 7 through 12. Our annual summer camps are an excellent introduction to the programs we offer, and they’re fun!
  • Provide feedback and/or guidance to the School via alumni surveys, attending our alumni gatherings, or serving on our Industrial Advisory Board.
