Blue Circle Background

The computer engineering program blends practical computer science courses in computerย organization, databases, operating systems, and networks with traditionally hands on electricalย engineering courses in digital circuits, digital system, embedded microprocessor systems,ย computer programming, and digital signal processing. This combination gives you a broad-based education that ties software to hardware and theory to application.

Why Study Computer Engineering at LSSU?

  • Challenging and rewarding program
  • Small class size
  • Hands-on learning
  • Intensive senior projects
  • Numerous career opportunities
  • Accreditation

The path to becoming a computer engineer is challenging but very rewarding. ย It involvesย completing a four-year curriculum that is filled with challenging classes in mathematics,ย computer science, the physical sciences, and, of course, engineering. At LSSU we strive to equipย our students and to provide a learning environment that maximizes success in both theirย studies and future careers.

More Information

Since a typical LSSU engineering class has about 15 students, you will have the chance to workย closely with your instructors, not graduate students, all of whom are full-time teaching facultyย members. The small class size also promotes interaction in the lecture and the laboratory withย other students and with your instructor.

Recognizing that learning comes through doing as well as listening, all LSSU engineeringย programs are designed to include a significant amount of engineering practice along the way.ย The core of computer engineering curriculum contains 12 engineering courses of which 9ย contain a laboratory component. Additionally, most technical elective courses also containย laboratory components. Many of these laboratory activities include a capstone project. ย Thisย means that you will have ample opportunity to learn through experience.

While the emphasis in the computer engineering curriculum is to provide a solid background in all related areas, it does contain significant computer programming, embedded systems, and digital electronics. ย  Additionally, the computer engineering curriculum enables students to specialize in the area of robotics and automation by pursuing that concentration built into the technical electives of the degree.

All LSSU engineering students participate in a senior project. Our senior projects span twoย semesters during the senior year and are usually sponsored by an industrial customer. A typicalย senior project team is comprised of four or five students having various engineering andย engineering technology majors. The team works directly with their customer to complete theย project. Skills such as leadership, team work, financial budgeting, project management,ย technical writing, presentations, and design reviews are just among the many soft skills that areย honed through this experience. ย It truly prepares student for the future in both industry andย academia.

LSSU engineering alumni are successful and engaged in meaningful careers in both Michigan and internationally. ย Recent graduates of the computer engineering programs have worked for Boeing, Tesla, Ford, Camsensor, Yazaki, Honeywell Aerospace, QComp, and Gentex. Others have gone on pursue graduate degrees at institutions such as Michigan Technological University and Michigan State University.
