John Weir Sault Police Department Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Sault Police Department and family of John Weir; a police officer who served with the Sault P.D. for nineteen years. On September 23, 1990, Mr. Weir responded to a call that involved a man threatening others with a knife. He was stabbed, resulting in injuries that left him in a coma for several months. After coming out of the coma, Detective Weir remained partially paralyzed until his death on November 7, 2004. The Sault Police Dept. established a golf outing fundraiser to assist the family with their expenses while caring for Detective Weir. This scholarship serves to honor his memory.

Purpose:  To provide financial support for LSSU students graduating from the LSSU Criminal Justice program, that is enrolling in the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Academy at LSSU.

Amount:  The amount of the annual award will be at least $250.

Eligibility:
Must be a graduate from the LSSU Criminal Justice program.
Must be a current MCOLES Academy Cadet.
Must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Active in extracurricular activities and exhibits outstanding citizenship.
Preference may be given to candidates who are the first to attend a university in their family.

Selection Committee:  The LSSU School of Criminal Justice faculty shall recommend eligible candidates to the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will follow general university scholarship policy in the selection of the scholarship recipient, based on criteria developed in conjunction with the donor.
