Accessibility is Important!

Our site attracts and serves a diverse group of people from around the globe. Some users have visual or motor-skill impairments. They use assistive technologies, such as screen readers and text-only browsers; others view our pages with outmoded technologies and slow connection speeds. Each day, more users come to our website via mobile devices of varying sizes and capabilities. It’s increasingly  important that web developers and content managers make their pages accessible to the greatest number of people possible.

Constructing pages within the WordPress content management system helps editors create accessible content by prompting them for alt tags and other tools. All web editors should familiarize themselves with these standards and attempt to maintain accessibility.

Some Guidelines to Enhance Accessibility

  • Include a description whenever you post an image, video, table or other content that can’t be accessed by a screen-reader.
  • Do not use flashing images and flashing text.
  • Ensure any time-dependent multimedia content can be stopped and started by the user.
  • Include closed-captions with video content whenever possible.
  • Include transcripts of audio content whenever possible (See library for options).
  • Format your text so it has good contrast against the background of your page.
  • Don’t use images to display text. If you must (perhaps for a logo), include the image text in the alt tag.
  • PDFs should be made accessible. The library has a computer with the necessary Acrobat Pro software to assist with this.
  • Videos should be closed captioned (see library for assistance, YouTube has a tool)
