W. Gordon & Adela J. Wilman Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Gordon Wilman to honor his wife, Adela’s wish to help students pursue a college education. Adela and her husband were married for 61 years before her death in July 2007. One of Gordon and Adela’s proudest moments was to see their granddaughter, Julie Suggitt graduate from Lake Superior State University in May 2007. Their daughter, Kimberly and grandson, David Suggitt also attended Lake State. This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman pursuing a degree in Education with a GPA of 3.0 or higher with preference to Sault Area High School graduates.

Daune Weiss Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Daune Weiss, a prominent Gaylord businesswoman who was tragically killed in a plane crash in October 2000. Just prior to her death, Daune was appointed to the LSSU Foundation Board of Directors. She was instrumental in establishing the Lake State Classic Golf Tournament and had contributed greatly to its planning and success. This scholarship gives preference to students from Otsego and Mackinac counties majoring in Elementary/Secondary Education or Business who has earned at least 26 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Thomas J. O'Neil Memorial Scholarship

He joined the military at age 18, serving in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1979. He worked at Canusa Hall - LSSU for more than 14 years until his death from cancer in 1996. He will always be remembered for his vivid stories of the military and love for his family, good friends and good times. He was not afraid to speak his mind and always believed in fighting for the underdog. The Thomas J. O'Neil Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an Eastern U.P. student who has earned at least 26 LSSU credits majoring in Human Services with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. If there is no Human Services major eligible, a student majoring in education may be considered.

"My journey through the Lake Superior State University Teacher Education Program prepared me greatly for my first year of teaching. Actually, I feel as though it is my second year of teaching because of the year-long internship. That was the most enriching part of the program. It was truly a hands-on/project-based experience - the best way that students learn! LSSU's Teacher Ed program is the BEST!!! Talking with teachers, principals, and educational leaders, they can't believe the exposure that LSSU grads have to teaching!"
