Students must first speak with their professors to have an excused absence such as for athletics or class trips as well as those who miss class due to illness or personal reasons.

CLEP (College-Level Examination Program)
Credit my be earned for general education courses by passing CLEP subject examinations. It is highly suggested you speak with your advisor and/or the registrar’s office before registering for a CLEP exam.

ALEKS PPL (Placement, Preparation, and Learning) is a math placement test that will confirm which math course you are most prepared for.
All incoming freshman are REQUIRED to take an ALEKS assessment. You are able to take the assessment 4 more times within a year to improve your score. There is 10 hour practice time allotted between each assessment taken.

FLATS (Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service)
Primarily used for International Studies-Business Majors to waive their foreign language requirement.
The FLATS testing program allows students all across the United States to take the FLATS test at a college or university in their area, and receive up to 12 college credits. Since there is a $10 processing fee charged for a refund, Please check with your school to make sure they will put the credits on your transcript before you register.

Students looking to take exams through other Universities may first request an appointment time online. They will also need to provide their professor with the testing coordinators email ([email protected]) so that the professor may forward any instructions as well as the exam.

Departments may provide their own examinations for certain courses. Students must have the written approval of the appropriate department chair to take the examination. Download the Credit by Examination form (pdf).
The current charge is $50 per credit hour. An examination grade of 2.00 or better is required for credit to be earned.
Credit earned by exam is recorded as transfer credit on the student’s transcript. Some universities may not accept transfer credit earned by departmental exam.

What is Advanced Placement?
The Advanced Placement Program is a nationally accredited testing program composed of college-level courses and exams for secondary school students. Lake Superior State University does offer credit to students whose Advanced Placement examination grades are considered acceptable.
Where can I find out about taking Advanced Placement courses and exams?
Your principal, department chair, teacher, counselor, or Advanced Placement coordinator can inform you about Advanced Placement course offerings at your school. You don’t have to take an Advanced Placement course to take an Advanced Placement exam, but to prepare you should be sure your study fits the appropriate Advanced Placement course description. What grades do I need to have on my Advanced Placement exams to receive credit at LSSU?
The College Board grade of 3 or higher on an individual exam is required for a student to receive LSSU credit in accordance with the chart provided here.
What exams receive credit at LSSU?
If a score of 3-5 is achieved on any Advanced Placement exam listed on the chart, the student will receive the number of semester hours of credit specified on the chart after being granted unconditional admission to Lake Superior State University.
How do I get my Advanced Placement scores to LSSU?
You may be able to have your Advanced Placement exam scores sent to LSSU when you register to take an Advanced Placement exam, when you receive your score, or by writing to Advanced Placement Program.
May I transfer my Advanced Placement credits once they have been received at LSSU?
Advanced Placement scores are always kept on file by the College Board. Therefore, you can request them sent to another school if you decide to transfer. Granting credits for Advanced Placement exams is always the prerogative of the institution to which you transfer.
Where do I inquire at LSSU to determine if my Advanced Placement credits have been granted?
LSSU’s Admissions Office will help you determine if your test reports have been received at LSSU, and whether your scores were acceptable for credit. The Registrar’s Office will help you determine if the credit has been posted on your official record at LSSU, and exactly how much credit you will receive.
