Advising For After Undergrad

Advising

Academic Advisors are a great resource and should be used early and often in your academic career. Ultimately, it is your responsibility, not your advisor’s, to ensure that all courses have been taken so that you may graduate on time from LSSU. By working closely with your academic advisor, you can avoid potential scheduling and graduation pitfalls.

Prior to each semester registration, you will need to meet with your academic advisor. If you don’t know who this is, simply go to your My.LSSU account and under student information, your advisor will be listed. Prior to visiting your advisor, print a degree audit sheet for your current degree or the degree you might be interested in pursuing. If you have taken classes at LSSU, or have transfer/AP credits on your transcript, fill these in on your degree audit.

Registration Dates:
1st week of November for the Spring Semester
Last week of March for Fall/Summer Semester

Pre-Med/Pre-Pharmacy Advising

Our Biochemistry Degree is specifically designed to prepare students for admission to Medical and Pharmacy Schools, and other professional degree programs. However, students should be aware that each school sets its own admissions requirements, so it is important to work closely with an advisor  to ensure that you meet all the admissions requirements of your program of choice. Medical Schools often require a 4 year degree for admissions, but you can apply to many pharmacy schools after 2-3 years of preparatory coursework at LSSU.

  • Many pharmacy schools also use a centralized application service, PharmCAS. You will also need to take the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). PCAT scores range from 200-600 with a median score of ~400. The 90th percentile is typically a 430. Individual pharmacy schools often require that you score above a particular level, so it is important to review the admissions requirements of the schools that you are interested in attending.

Many Pre-Professional students also belong to the LSSU Pre-Professional Society. Visit us on Facebook.

Graduate School in Chemistry

The chemistry department at LSSU gives students the necessary coursework and laboratory experience to prepare them for graduate programs and professional schools.

Why Choose Graduate School?

Chemistry graduate students in Ph.D. programs typically do not pay for graduate school. Tuition fees are often waived and the student is given an annual stipend (average stipend is ~$15,000).

A Ph.D. program in chemistry usually takes 5 or 6 years, but this depends on the student and the project being undertaken. Most programs require 1-2 years of course work followed by a few years of laboratory research.

A Master’s program is typically 2 years. There are some programs that are based on coursework, however, most schools require research. Not all master’s degrees provide a stipend.

What is required?

The general GRE‘s are commonly required for applications for graduate school. Some programs require the subject test as well, either in chemistry, or biochemistry. Registration for GRE tests are often before the fall of senior year.

Application deadlines for Ph.D. programs are often in December or January.
