Students enrolled in the emphasis in criminalistics, law enforcement or public safety in the criminal justice baccalaureate degree may be eligible for MCOLES certification. Upon graduation and the completion of the mini-academy, these students may be eligible for employment with local law enforcement agencies in Michigan without further training.
Students enrolled in the associates degree in corrections, will also take the five courses necessary for this certification.
Canadian students may substitute CJ202 Canadian Criminal Law and CJ406 Advanced Canadian Jurisprudence for CJ319 Substantive Criminal Law and CJ409 Procedural Law. PS160 Introduction to Canadian Government may be substituted for PS110 Introduction to U.S. Government.
To qualify for admission as freshman, applicants must meet the minimum criteria of Lake Superior State University. Code of Conduct: Majors in Criminal Justice and Fire Science will be required to sign a code of conduct. The code specifies certain behavior on the part of students and also states that violation of criminal laws and/or University regulations may end in the separation of the student from the Criminal Justice or Fire Science program.
The LSSU Bachelors of Science in Fire Science-Generalist was developed for students looking to work for Federal, State and Local governments as well as private sector companies. The course of study is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge with a vast amount of practical hands-on-learning. The BS Fire Science degree use Pro Board accreditation. The University houses the Fire Fighter Regional Training Center which allows out students access to greater more advanced fire fighting training.
