Shiga University Visting DignitaryHANDS ACROSS THE WATER – Yoshimasa Kurashige, vice president at the University of Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is introduced to Lake Superior State University deans and department heads by provost David Roland Finley, right, prior to a working luncheon on Aug. 14. Kurashige is visiting LSSU to explore an expansion of academic and cultural programs that students and faculty from the two universities have enjoyed since 2000. Shiga prefecture borders Japan’s largest fresh-water lake and, like Lake State, deploys programs ranging from ecology to fisheries management. The university’s hometown, also called Shiga, has been Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan’s sister city since Sept. 9, 1994. From left are Paul Kelso (School of Physical Sciences), Jillena Rose (College of Arts and Sciences), Barbara Keller (School of Physical Sciences), and Donna Fiebelkorn (College of Arts and Sciences).
