SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University (LSSU) announced plans to transition operations of the campus-based Health Care Center to Alcona Health Center, ensuring continued access to quality health care services for students and the surrounding community.
LSSU will transition operations of the Health Care Center to Alcona Health Center, a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center committed to providing accessible, high-quality health care services throughout northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. The transition follows approval from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of Alcona Health Center’s Change in Scope request.
“The Health Care Center has been an important resource for our community for many years. We’re committed to ensuring this service continues,” said LSSU President Dr. David Travis.
“As a proud Lake Superior State University graduate, I understand firsthand the important role this institution plays in the lives of its students and the surrounding community,” said Nancy Spencer, CEO of Alcona Health Center. “We are honored to partner with Lake Superior State University and continue providing access to health care services on campus. We look forward to supporting the health and well-being of Lakers and the broader community for years to come.”
The transition of services to Alcona Health Center began on July 27, 2026, and will take place over a 120-day transition period. Current Health Care Center staff will remain in place throughout the transition and will have the opportunity to join Alcona Health Center.
Additional information about the transition, services, and future operations of the Health Care Center will be shared as details become available.
