SuperiorAnalytics(formerlyEnvironmentalAnalysisLaboratory)ishousedintheCollegeofScienceandEnvironmentatLakeSuperiorStateUniversityprovidesanalysisservicestostate,federal,andlocalenvironmentalmonitoringprogramsemphasizingeducation,research,andcommunityservice.WefollowUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyandMIDepartmentofEnvironmentalQualityapprovedanalyticalprotocolsonallanalysesallowingdatafromtheEnvironmentalAnalysisLaboratorytobeincludedinappropriatestatedatabases.

Thislaboratoryprovidesstudents,staff,andfacultywiththeopportunitytocollaboratewithexternalagenciesinresearchprojectsinvolvingrelevantenvironmentalproblems.Wealsoprovidethecommunitywithtechnicalassistanceforwaterqualityanalysisandmonitoring,establishingalinkbetweengraduatingseniorsandpotentialemployers.

Establishedin2002,theLakeSuperiorStateUniversityEnvironmentalAnalysisLaboratory(EAL)wascreatedtomeettheanalysisandresearchneedsofMichigan’sEasternUpperPeninsula.AstheregionsonlyfullserviceenvironmentallabtheEALoffersawiderangeofanalyticalservicestoitsclientsincludingsamplecollection,inorganicandorganicanalysisinavarietyofmatrices,aswellasgenetic,microscopy&microanalysis,projectdesign,andprojectimplementationconsultation.

UnderthedirectionofLSSUfacultyandstafftheEALoffersundergraduatestudentsinternshipopportunitieswithinthelab.StudentInternsareinvolvedinallaspectsoflaboratoryoperation,affordingthemrealhandsonexperiencewithnotonlytheanalyticalsideofalaboratorybutalsobusinesssideincludingdatareportinganddirectclientinteraction.Thegoaloftheseinternshipsistoprovideourstudentswithaskillsetallowingthemtomakeaseamlesstransitiontotheworkforceorgraduateschool.TodatetheEALhasemployednearlysixtystudents,allofwhichhavemovedontobecomesuccessfulprofessionals.
