Visit the Great Lakes Discovery Center

The Dr. Constance Baker Great Lakes Discovery Center (GLDC) invites you to explore the science, stories, and stewardship of the Great Lakes through engaging, hands-on exhibits designed for visitors of all ages. Located in Sault Ste. Marie and operated by Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE), the GLDC brings freshwater issues to life with engaging displays focused on fisheries management, watershed connections, and the challenges posed by aquatic invasive species.

A highlight for many guests is the lake sturgeon touch tank, which offers a rare opportunity to connect with one of the Great Lakes’ most ancient and iconic fish—often called a living fossil. This hands-on experience brings conservation to life and underscores the importance of research, restoration, and long-term stewardship. We invite you to visit the GLDC, engage with the exhibits, and learn more about the work CFRE students and scientists are doing across the Great Lakes to understand, protect, and sustain these extraordinary freshwater ecosystems.
