 Certifications

Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Certification:

Students enrolled in the emphasis in criminalistics, law enforcement or public safety in the criminal justice baccalaureate degree may be eligible for MCOLES certification. Upon graduation and the completion of the mini-academy, these students may be eligible for employment with local law enforcement agencies in Michigan without further training.

Admission Requirements:The Lake Superior State University, blue with gold MCOLES Academy patch.

  • Age 18 minimum
  • U.S Citizen
  • Valid MI Drivers License
  • Minimum of an Associates degree
  • Complete and pass the Reading and Writing test as prescribed by MCOLES (national standardized pre-screening test)
  • Meet MCOLES physical fitness entrance standards within 120 days prior to starting the Academy
  • Meet MCOLES health and vision minimum standards (normal color recognition is required in Michigan)
  • Successfully pass the entrance interview and background screen
  • No Felony convictions

Students enrolled in the associates  degree in corrections, will also take the five courses necessary for this certification.

Canadian students may substitute CJ202 Canadian Criminal Law and CJ406 Advanced Canadian Jurisprudence for CJ319 Substantive Criminal Law and CJ409 Procedural Law. PS160 Introduction to Canadian Government may be substituted for PS110 Introduction to U.S. Government.

Entrance Requirements:

To qualify for admission as freshman, applicants must meet the minimum criteria of Lake Superior State University.  Code of Conduct: Majors in Criminal Justice and Fire Science will be required to sign a code of conduct. The code specifies certain behavior on the part of students and also states that violation of criminal laws and/or University regulations may end in the separation of the student from the Criminal Justice or Fire Science program.
