Art Reception 5x7

SMALL WORKS, BIG PERSPECTIVE – Wayne Whitehouse and his son, Wolfgang, join a packed gallery during the opening reception for the fifth annual 5×7 Art Show and Competition, hosted at the Lake Superior State University Arts Center on April 20. With them is Whitehouse’s daughter, Shayla, who submitted a work into this year’s competition. The works, each for $50, are in Arts Center gallery through May, 12 – 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Arts Center gallery exhibition programming and Sunrise Rotary-underwritten literacy program initiatives in Sault Area Public Schools. Patrons and guests mingled over hors d’oeuvres, live piano music, and more than 100 5×7 canvases donated by regional Michigan and Ontario artists during a reception on April 20 in the Lake Superior State University Arts Center gallery. The evening opened the fifth annual 5×7 Art Show, a juried competition co-sponsored by LSSU and Chippewa County Sunrise Rotary Club. Patrons viewed and purchased submitted works to benefit the LSSU Arts Center gallery exhibition programming and Sunrise Rotary Club literacy initiatives in Sault Area Public Schools. Guests also enjoyed musical accompaniment by the cellist groups, Cantus Celli and the Soo Cello Crew.

Taking first-place honors and receiving $300 was Sheri Moore Pinconning, Mich., for her acrylic mixed media work, High Tide; second place with a prize of $200 went to Shena Sloboda for her oil painting, Heading To/From Work; third place with a prize of $100 was given to Joann Deuel Shelby of Marquette, Mich., for her alcohol-ink, Slice of Wonder. Honorable mentions went to Susan Johnson of Dafter, Mich., (Some Only See Stones); Stefanie Moran of Brimley, Mich., (Longevity); and Mike Moberley of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., (Chevy Head Shot).

All works, each for purchase at $50, are on display through May in the Arts Center gallery, 12 – 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Contact gallery manager Sharon Dorrity at acgallery@lssu.edu for information about next year’s show and sponsorship details.
