One-of-a-Kind Opportunities in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences

LSSU students receive valuable learning experiences through classroom, research, and employment opportunities to prepare them for the next step in their career.

Nearly a dozen LSSU classes in multiple departments use CFRE equipment and facilities to provide experiential learning
Numerous LSSU students conduct research in conjunction with CFRE annually
CFRE employs approximately 10 students annually, providing them with hands-on experience in aquatic ecology, fisheries management, interpretation, and fish culture

Fish Hatchery Employment and Volunteer Opportunities

Students complete hands-on, career-specific experiences as hatchery employees or volunteers during the academic year and summer. Their duties include, but are not limited to:

Rearing Atlantic Salmon
Working to control invasive Sea Lamprey
Conducting field research on coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes

Internships

Students participate in summer internships with partner agencies, such as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians.

Conferences

CFRE supports numerous senior thesis projects each year. Jake Larsen, class of 2018 and former hatchery employee, earned the Best Student Poster Award at the 2018 meeting of the Michigan Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.
