ThisprojectwillhelpguidefutureeffortstocaptureLakeSturgeonbyidentifyinglocationswithhighdensitiesoffish,therebyincreasingtheefficiencyoflabor-intensivenettingandset-liningsurveys.

Thegutmicrobiomeisknowntoaffectthehealth,physiology,andbehaviorofvertebrates,butverylittleisknownabouttheserelationshipsinfishes.WithsupportfromtheCooperativeInstituteforGreatLakesResearch,CFREpersonnelareworkingwithcollaboratorsfromSt.LouisUniversityandWashingtonUniversityinSt.LouistobegintounravelthemysteriesofthegutmicrobiomeandviromeinAtlanticSalmon.Specifically,wearedetermininghowthegutmicrobiomeandviromediffer:

  • Betweenage-0andadultAtlanticSalmon
  • BetweenadultAtlanticSalmonrearedatdifferenthatcheries
  • Withinage-0salmonbeforeandafterbeingvaccinatedforBacterialKidneyDisease

Weanticipatethatourresultswillleadtoadjustmentsinhatcheryrearingpracticestomaximizesurvivalofstockedsalmon.

Forthepastdecade,LSSUhasbeenapartnerinstitutionontheGreatLakesCoastalWetlandMonitoringProgram(CWMP),aneffortfundedbytheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyandledbyCentralMichiganUniversity.

LSSUstudentsaretrainedinstandardizedmonitoringprotocolsandcollectvaluabledataonwetlandfishes,macroinvertebrates,habitat,andwaterqualityeachyeartohelpimproveourunderstandingofthehealthandchangingconditionsofcoastalwetlandsinnorthernLakeHuronandeasternLakeSuperior.Over30LSSUundergraduateshavebeeninvolvedinthisprojectsinceitsinception.

Forthepastdecade,CFREresearchershavebeenworkingwiththeOttawaNationalForesttodocumentthedistributionandhabitatpreferencesoffreshwatermussels,nativeandsensitivemusselspecies,inwesternUPwatershedstosupportconservationandhabitatrestoration.

Startingin2021,CFREresearchersandpartnerswilldevelopmusselsurveyrecommendationsthatcanbeimplementedathydropowerfacilitieswhenmaintenancedrawdownsoccurandmusselrelocation(i.e.,rescue)effortsareneededtoavoidstrandingorganisms.Thegoalistomaximizemusselspeciessurvivalwhileminimizinghumaneffortrequiredtorelocatemussels.
